Health authorities have issued a recall for a batch of a popular antidepressant medication due to a packaging error where a patient discovered a different medication inside their package. The patient, who was taking Sertraline 100mg film-coated tablets, found Citalopram 40mg film-coated tablets in the sealed carton. Amarox, a UK-based pharmaceutical company, has initiated a precautionary recall of the affected batch of Sertraline as confirmed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Both medications are manufactured by the same company at the same location. The MHRA stated that the manufacturing mistake likely occurred during the secondary packaging process of the blister strips into the cartons. Patients who suspect they have taken Citalopram tablets in error or are experiencing adverse effects should promptly seek medical advice. Pharmacists are advised to halt distribution of the affected batch and notify patients who may have received the incorrect product – Sertraline 100mg tablets batch number V2500425.
Dr. Alison Cave, the MHRA’s chief safety officer, emphasized the importance of verifying the medication in the carton for patients prescribed Sertraline 100mg tablets from batch number V2500425. Patients should check the batch number and expiry date on the outer packaging. If the blister strips contain Citalopram 40mg tablets, individuals are instructed to contact their pharmacy immediately. If the blister strips contain Sertraline 100mg tablets, no further action is necessary. Patients who have mistakenly taken Citalopram instead of Sertraline may experience heightened serotonergic side effects such as nausea, headache, sleep disturbances, and mild anxiety.

Sertraline, an antidepressant used to treat depression and various mental health conditions like OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, and social anxiety disorder, falls under the category of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). According to the NHS, SSRIs like Sertraline elevate serotonin levels in the brain, leading to improved mood and calmness.
Sertraline tablets are typically taken once daily at a consistent time. However, if a dose is missed, it should be skipped, and the next dose taken as scheduled. Taking two doses is not recommended to compensate for a missed dose. Citalopram, another SSRI antidepressant, is commonly prescribed for low mood, depression, and occasionally panic attacks. It may take four to six weeks for Citalopram to reach full effectiveness, with some individuals experiencing benefits within one to two weeks.
Patients on either Sertraline or Citalopram should consult their doctor before discontinuing the medication abruptly. Physicians can assist in gradually reducing the dosage over time to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
