“Starmer Dodges Ethics Probe Amid Parliament Turmoil”

Published on

Keir Starmer successfully navigated a challenge to refer him to a parliamentary ethics investigation related to the Peter Mandelson controversy amidst a day of intense parliamentary activity. Members of Parliament rejected a motion by the Conservatives to send the Prime Minister for scrutiny by the Privileges Committee regarding allegations of misleading statements on Lord Mandelson’s appointment, with a vote count of 335 against 223, resulting in a majority of 112. Despite efforts by Downing Street to avoid a damaging defeat, internal criticism arose as Starmer instructed Labour MPs to oppose the motion, which was denounced by No10 as a “desperate political ploy.”

Fifteen Labour left-wing members rebelled against the party line, including key figures like John McDonnell and Rebecca Long-Bailey, while an additional 53 Labour MPs did not participate in the voting process. Prior to the vote, Cabinet Minister Darren Jones criticized Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch for what he described as “incoherent outbursts” and labeled the motion a politically motivated spectacle, emphasizing the diversion from crucial national issues.

Accusations of avoiding scrutiny were hurled at the Prime Minister by the Tory leader during the debate, highlighting concerns that Labour MPs were being pressured to defend the government’s actions prematurely. Labour MP Emma Lewell expressed disappointment and frustration over the handling of the scandal, denouncing the Government’s directive to its MPs to oppose the motion as disconnected from public sentiment and potentially hiding pertinent information.

Amidst the turmoil, former aide Morgan McSweeney acknowledged a significant error in advising the PM on Lord Mandelson’s appointment, ultimately leading to his resignation earlier this year. McSweeney clarified during a Foreign Affairs Committee questioning that there was no compromise on standards in expediting the appointment process, emphasizing the focus on efficiency rather than impropriety. He also refuted claims of pressuring officials to hasten the approval process for Mandelson.

In a separate development, concerns were raised about the UK’s new ambassador to the US, Christian Turner, criticizing the special relationship between the US and the UK, suggesting a stronger bond with Israel. Turner characterized the fallout from Lord Mandelson’s appointment as a crisis that had severe implications for the government and the Prime Minister’s tenure, further complicating the already strained US-UK relations amidst ongoing global challenges.

The Foreign Office clarified that Turner’s remarks were made in an informal setting and do not reflect the official stance of the UK Government.
