“Quick & Essential: Cervical Screening Saves Lives”

Published on

I recently had my cervical screening appointment, and I was surprised by how long it took. Although I’ve had screenings before since women are invited for cervical cancer screening through the NHS from age 25, the time between appointments has now changed from every three years to every five years.

According to Cancer Research, there are approximately 3,299 new cases of cervical cancer annually in the UK, with 880 deaths from cervical cancer reported between 2022 and 2024. The good news is that 99.8% of cervical cancer cases are preventable.

Feeling nervous before my appointment, I walked to my GP practice on a sunny day, ready to listen to music but realized I hadn’t played anything. Once at the doctor’s office, I had a minor annoyance with another patient before being called in for my appointment.

The appointment took place in a building with a broken lift, so I climbed the stairs to the first floor where the waiting room was empty. The senior nurse practitioner, Tracy, explained the screening process, checked my weight, and discussed the procedure.

Tracy reassured me about the screening results and explained the implications of an abnormal result. She emphasized the importance of early detection in preventing cervical cancer, describing it as a preventable disease.

During the test, Tracy guided me through the process and completed it swiftly. The entire appointment, from check-in to leaving the doctor’s office, lasted just 10 minutes, proving that the process is quick and essential.

Cervical screening tests are crucial in preventing cervical cancer, with around 5,000 lives saved annually in the UK. The screening checks for high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is linked to most cervical cancers.

Helen Hyndman MBE, lead nurse at The Eve Appeal, highlighted the significance of cervical screening and provided tips to make the appointment more comfortable. Additional information and support can be found on their website or through their Ask Eve nurse service.

In conclusion, while cervical screening may be uncomfortable and nerve-wracking, it only takes a few minutes and can potentially save lives.
