The character Aunt Vidala in The Testaments has sparked interest among fans wanting to know more about the actress portraying her, Mabel Li. The Handmaid’s Tale sequel is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus, offering six episodes for viewers.
The show explores the lives of young women in Gilead, mentored by Aunt Lydia, played by Ann Dowd, and other women who recall a time before the oppressive regime. Mabel Li, an Australian actress with a diverse heritage, was born in New Zealand to parents from Guangzhou, China, before settling in Australia.
Despite initial doubts due to the lack of Asian representation in the industry, Li pursued acting and was accepted into Australia’s prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Her debut on the small screen was in the murder mystery drama The Tailings, but her role in The Testaments is one of her most significant to date.
Li has connections with other notable figures in the industry, including Bridgerton star Yerin Ha, whom she seems to share a friendship with. Both actors studied at NIDA, and have been seen supporting each other on social media and championing diversity in acting.
Additionally, Li is associated with Australian actress Sophie Wilde, known for her roles in Everything Now and horror films like Bring Her Back and Talk To Me. The Testaments can be watched every Wednesday on Disney Plus.
