“Nigel Farage Under Scrutiny for Undisclosed £5M Donation”

Published on

Nigel Farage is facing calls for a standards investigation following allegations of not disclosing a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency magnate. The leader of Reform has been criticized for reportedly receiving the donation from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire based in Thailand, just before assuming office as an MP. Parliamentary regulations mandate that new MPs must declare any donations or gifts received in the year before taking office.

Farage has justified the substantial contribution as being designated for his personal security. Harborne’s donation was made prior to Farage’s announcement to run in Clacton, as detailed in a report by The Guardian. Subsequently, in an interview with The Telegraph, Farage disclosed that his residence had been targeted in a firebombing incident, claiming that the funds from the billionaire were allocated for his protection, as he alleged that his security requests to the Home Office had been denied.

Responding to the situation, Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake emphasized the obligation for Farage to report all political donations and gifts received during the preceding year to the House of Commons. The Tories are now referring Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, expressing concerns over the significant donation from Christopher Harborne.

Labour’s Anna Turley has also condemned Farage, accusing him of breaching rules by failing to declare the financial support from his wealthy benefactor. Turley criticized Reform for downplaying these actions, undermining public confidence in political integrity and highlighting a pattern of Farage and his party members believing they are exempt from standard regulations.

Christopher Harborne, also known as Chakrit Sakunkrit in Thailand, has contributed £22 million to Farage’s party since 2019, alongside £1.6 million to the Conservative Party. Despite the £5 million donation not appearing in the members’ register of interests, Reform asserts that all protocols have been adhered to.

In a statement to The Telegraph, Farage clarified that the donation was intended to ensure his lifelong safety, expressing his lack of faith in state-funded security due to previous unsuccessful attempts. He recounted instances of threats to his safety, including a firebombing incident at his residence and assaults during the 2024 General Election campaign.

Harborne, who holds a 12% stake in the cryptocurrency Tether, was reportedly present with Farage during an incident where a milkshake was thrown at the politician while campaigning in Newcastle in 2019. The ongoing debate on political donor influence has prompted calls for limiting individual donations to £100,000 to uphold the integrity of the political system.

A spokesperson for Reform defended the donation as a personal gift given before Farage’s election, assuring compliance with regulations. The MPs’ code of conduct stipulates that all financial interests and benefits received in the year preceding entry into the Commons must be disclosed within specific timeframes to uphold transparency and accountability.
