England’s midfielder, Mason Mount, marked his managerial debut with a remarkable victory as his team, Wishes United FC, triumphed over the Mascots with a score of 32-2 at St George’s Park. The match was a special occasion where children facing serious health challenges were given the opportunity to experience being treated like professional footballers for two days, in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup in June.
Fellow Manchester United and England star Luke Shaw, along with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, managed the opposing team, comprised of mascots from top clubs. Mason expressed his astonishment at the event, stating, “I’m blown away by what we created.” One of the standout players from his team, 10-year-old Max Shepherd from Aylesbury, celebrated not only the victory but also his birthday, sharing, “It’s the best birthday I’ve ever had. When I grow up, I want to be a footballer. This has given me a taste of how cool it would be.”
During the special experience, the Wishes United squad enjoyed luxurious accommodations at the Hilton hotel, engaged in a press conference, received coaching from UEFA professionals, and played a match overseen by a UEFA referee, all at St George’s Park, the prestigious training base for England’s national teams.
Mason, who funded the event, emphasized the importance of bringing joy to these children who have faced significant challenges, noting, “These children have been through so much, this is a moment of joy. They threw themselves into it. There were no worries at all. For two days they didn’t have to think of anything else, just be in the moment and enjoy it.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Mason acknowledged the impact of his parents in shaping his values of giving back and helping others. The event was organized in collaboration with Make-A-Wish, an organization dedicated to fulfilling life-changing wishes for critically ill children, with the CEO highlighting the importance of bringing joy to these children.
Mason expressed his personal connection to the event, stating, “As a child, this would have been my wish for sure. I had a dream of playing football for my country, and I’m so fortunate that it happened. These kids, through difficult and tough times, haven’t had the same opportunities, so it’s amazing they’ve been able to come and see it all.”
Participants like Max, Finley, and Robyn, each battling their own adversities, found solace and excitement in the event, as their families shared in their joy and pride. The day was filled with emotional moments, as parents witnessed their children revel in the experience of a lifetime.
