“The Family Chat Campaign Promotes Healthy Screen Time”

Published on

Balancing screen time with quality family activities can be a challenging task on a day-to-day basis. With children increasingly using devices for various purposes such as learning, socializing, gaming, and streaming, determining a reasonable amount of screen time can become a blurry line.

In an effort to address this issue, The Family Chat campaign, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, aims to promote open and honest discussions within families regarding online safety throughout 2026. Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and their children to discuss the challenges they encounter, how they are managing them, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety resources can be beneficial.

One of the valuable resources offered is a downloadable family pledge where families can agree upon simple commitments related to healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s online safety. Giovanna Fletcher mentions that while her family is currently handling screen time well, she emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing the situation to adapt to changing needs as children grow older.

For the Karley family, consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a crucial role in staying connected, managing school responsibilities, and navigating their busy lives. To address concerns about excessive screen time, they participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, engaging in activities to raise awareness about the balance between screen and offline activities.

After completing the challenges, the Karley family committed to implementing their learnings by filling out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, focusing on screen time management, privacy, and sharing guidelines. By leveraging expert advice and resources from Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, they aim to strike a healthy balance between their digital lives and real-world interactions. Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm, the family is prioritizing quality time together, engaging in activities like quizzes to strengthen family bonds.

Furthermore, the family emphasizes the importance of being cautious about online content, highlighting key indicators to watch out for, such as sensational headlines, unusual spelling errors, and stories lacking credibility. Encouraging fact-checking and verifying social media accounts, they aim to promote responsible online behavior among family members.
