On Thursday, voters in England are set to choose from a large pool of candidates, including Amu Gib, who is currently in prison awaiting trial. Gib, a 30-year-old former NHS patient transport driver and bike mechanic, is one of 17 candidates running for Islington Independents in the Finsbury Park ward of London. Along with four other Palestine Action activists, Gib has been in custody at HMP Bronzefield for nearly ten months, accused of vandalizing RAF Voyager planes at an RAF air base, allegedly causing £7 million in damages. Despite being restricted from internet access, Gib shared their thoughts on their candidacy and political motivations, emphasizing the need to advocate for societal issues.
During a recent hunger strike, Gib demanded the cessation of operations by the Israel-based defense company Elbit Systems in the UK. Although the hunger strike ended after 48 days due to health concerns, Gib’s commitment to their cause remains strong. Gib expressed solidarity with fellow hunger striker Umer Khalid, who is facing serious health issues, highlighting the harsh conditions faced by prisoners. Advocates, including prominent figures like Greta Thunberg, have called for Gib’s release on bail to allow them to participate in the election process.
The prolonged detention of Gib and their co-accused under “terrorism” allegations has drawn criticism from Amnesty International UK, questioning the use of such powers against activists. Gib has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them, including conspiracy offenses with severe potential penalties. Despite the challenges of imprisonment, Gib remains resolute in their fight for justice and societal change, citing the importance of grassroots movements and activism.
As supporters rally behind Gib’s candidacy, the upcoming election in Finsbury Park ward will determine whether Gib becomes the first English politician to secure a seat while incarcerated. Their journey from activism to political candidacy reflects a broader narrative of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
