Anne Hathaway’s Italian Accent Remark Resurfaces Past

Published on

Anne Hathaway, known for her avoidance of controversy, recently sparked old Hollywood memories during a casual moment on the promotion of “Devil Wears Prada 2.” The Oscar-winning actress, now a mother of two, playfully mentioned that Italian accents “scar” her, a comment that fans connected to her past relationship with Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri.

In a recent interview on the Ladbible podcast, the 43-year-old star hinted at her past as the conversation with Emily Blunt and other co-stars turned personal during the filming of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” in Milan. While discussing accents, Hathaway’s comments stood out, especially when she expressed her fondness for Italian accents but admitted being “scarred” in that regard.

The exchange continued with Blunt praising Australian accents on men, to which Hathaway humorously disagreed due to her personal association with Italian accents. The banter ended with Hathaway light-heartedly sharing her experiences with her name being pronounced differently in Italy, adding a touch of humor to the conversation.

Hathaway’s past relationship with Follieri, a wealthy Italian property developer with a Vatican connection facade, came to a dramatic end in 2008 when he was arrested in the U.S. and subsequently convicted of fraud and money laundering charges. Despite Hathaway’s innocence in the scandal, her association with Follieri drew media attention, leading her to maintain a low profile regarding the relationship.

Following the breakup, Hathaway shifted her focus to her career, starring in significant films like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Les Misérables,” for which she won an Academy Award. Her recent playful remark about Italian accents is seen as a lighthearted acknowledgment of a past she has moved on from.

After her breakup with Follieri, Hathaway’s relationship with actor and jewelry designer Adam Shulman began, marking a transition to a more private personal life away from the public eye. The couple married in 2012 in an intimate ceremony, emphasizing Hathaway’s deliberate move towards a quieter, stable life.

Since then, Hathaway and Shulman have welcomed two sons, with the actress maintaining strict boundaries around her family’s privacy. In interviews, Hathaway credits Shulman for bringing stability and grounding to her life, contrasting with the turbulent nature of her previous high-profile relationship.

Amid renewed interest in “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” Hathaway’s comments on Italian accents have reignited discussions about her past, showcasing how even a light-hearted remark can bring old scandals back into the spotlight. Despite moving on and focusing on her family and career, Hathaway’s past continues to intrigue the public whenever she touches upon it, intentionally or not.
