King Charles has concluded his rapid visit to the United States, during which he and Queen Camilla participated in consecutive events in Washington DC, Virginia, and New York over four days. Despite this being the King’s first trip to America in many years, he did not make the journey to the West Coast to see his estranged son, Prince Harry, or his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet.
The relationship between Harry and his father remains strained, with only a few in-person meetings in recent years. The last face-to-face encounter between the two took place in September last year when the Duke of Sussex was in London for the annual WellChild awards.
It was decided well in advance of Charles’s US visit that he would not have the opportunity to meet his son, daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, or their children during his official visit. However, former BBC royal commentator Jennie Bond believes that Harry may have had conflicting emotions witnessing the extensive coverage of the King’s visit to the country he has resided in for over six years.
Jennie noted that while there is a possibility of the father and son repairing their relationship, it is likely to happen behind closed doors as they work on reconciling after years of estrangement. She emphasized that their strained relationship would necessitate a private setting for any future meetings, rather than a public platform like the high-profile state visit.
Despite Harry’s transition away from royal duties since 2020, he and his father share common interests and charitable endeavors. However, Jennie pointed out that observing Charles engage in philanthropic activities in his home country might have felt surreal for Harry.
Jennie highlighted Harry’s expressed opinions on the royal lifestyle and the importance of speaking truth to power, suggesting that he might have experienced conflicting sentiments while observing his father’s interactions. She mentioned that Harry likely supported his father’s diplomatic responses during the visit, especially regarding issues like supporting Ukraine and addressing derogatory remarks about British military personnel.
During the visit, President Trump took a jab at Meghan Markle, further fueling Harry’s disassociation from the Royal Family. Jennie noted that these incidents would not have helped to improve relations between Harry, Meghan, and the President.
The visit, while contributing to US-UK relations, did not alleviate tensions between the President and the Sussexes, according to Jennie.
