“Air Canada Flight from London Makes U-Turn Due to Emergency Odor”

Published on

Passengers aboard an Air Canada flight from London Heathrow had to make a U-turn following an emergency declaration. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff of Flight AC853, a Boeing 777-300ER en route to Toronto on Saturday morning. While cruising at 34,000 feet over the Atlantic, the pilots decided to return the aircraft, emitting a 7700 emergency code at 9:30 am, almost an hour after departure.

The plane safely landed back at Heathrow’s runway 27L at 10:02 am, with passengers disembarking after taxiing to the gate. Flight operations on the runway were momentarily halted. Air Canada promptly organized a replacement departure on the same morning. The airline later confirmed that the emergency was triggered by an “acrid odor” emanating from a cooling fan.

According to Air Canada, the decision to return to London was precautionary due to the detected odor. The flight with 369 passengers onboard was cancelled, and alternate arrangements were made for the customers on subsequent flights, ensuring their safety.

When a pilot inputs the emergency code 7700, it signals air traffic control of distress and the need for immediate attention. This code serves as a general alert for various emergencies other than hijacking or radio failure. Upon receiving a 7700 alert, airports activate special procedures, including standby emergency services.

In a separate incident last month, a Ryanair flight en route from the UK to Portugal declared a mid-air emergency shortly after takeoff from London Stansted. The flight diverted to Bournemouth Airport following the emergency declaration, landing safely within an hour of departure. Reports suggest a medical issue was the cause of the emergency on board.
