“UK Braces for Thunderstorms and Hail Amid Rising Temperatures”

Published on

Thunderstorms and hail could occur in various parts of the UK today, despite temperatures rising to 26C earlier this week.

According to the latest forecast from the Met Office, the weather conditions today are expected to be wet in northeast England and southern Scotland initially, with the possibility of thunder and hail in southern England and Wales. Many areas are likely to experience humid conditions.

As the day progresses into the evening, showers are predicted to diminish overnight, leading to predominantly dry weather. Cooler temperatures are anticipated in the northern regions, where frost might develop in rural areas.

Ventusky, a weather mapping service, indicates a potential for thunderstorms across a significant portion of southern England and Wales around 7pm tonight. The data suggests that 22 counties/principal areas could be affected.

In preparation for thunderstorms, the Met Office advises individuals to unplug non-essential appliances to prevent power surges caused by lightning. It also recommends staying away from underground areas prone to flooding, such as car parks and basements.

During a thunderstorm, it is advisable to avoid using landline phones unless in an emergency, as telephone lines can conduct electricity. Activities like golf, fishing, or boating on a lake should also be avoided.

If caught driving in a thunderstorm, it is safest to wind up windows and remain inside the car, as the metal frame acts as a Faraday cage, directing the current to the ground. Convertible cars are at higher risk and could catch fire if struck by lightning. Current can also flow through various parts of modern vehicles, including GPS and radio systems, as well as metal interior components like handles and pedals.
