Charlize Theron has expressed her stance on her children’s financial independence, emphasizing that they will need to earn their own living rather than relying on her support indefinitely.
The 50-year-old actress, known for her roles in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, adopted two children named Jackson in 2012 and August in 2015. Theron has chosen to keep her children away from the public eye, offering occasional updates while outlining her strategy to secure their best interests.
During a recent podcast interview, Theron disclosed her decision to not spoil her children. She plans to guide them towards regular jobs, teaching them how to drive in modest cars, and encouraging them to build their careers independently, despite her substantial reported net worth of £151 million.
In her own words on the Therapuss podcast, she humorously remarked, “Your first car will be a Datsun because you’re going to mess it up… You’re a new driver. So, we’re not starting with a fancy car. We need some experience, and we’ll earn it.”
Theron emphasized that she will not provide her children with a financial safety net for their future endeavors. She highlighted the importance of them finding employment and being self-sufficient rather than relying on her perpetual support.
Discussing the importance of work experience for her children, she encouraged them by saying, “Every time we go to Starbucks, I’m like, ‘Look at this… do you see how friendly? You have to be that friendly every morning at 6am, like start getting ready for it’.”
Theron’s approach aligns with other celebrities who have chosen a similar path for their children. Artists like Sting, Nigella Lawson, and Shaquille O’Neal have shared their beliefs on the value of self-earned success rather than inheriting wealth, nurturing a work ethic and independence in their offspring.
