“Revamped Claire’s to Open 50 New Stores After UK Shutdown”

Published on

Claire’s is making a comeback to the retail scene by planning to open 50 new stores shortly after shutting down all 154 of its UK locations. Kroll administrators confirmed the closures, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses. However, the closures did not impact Claire’s 356 concessions, including those within Asda stores, and its headquarters.

According to reports from The Guardian, Claire’s is expected to gradually reopen four to 10 stores per week starting in June. Julien Jarjoura, the operator of Claire’s stores in several European countries, is in the process of securing new leases with UK landlords to make this possible.

Jarjoura will be funding the new stores independently, which will continue to offer ear-piercing services. The revamped stores will feature new jewelry and accessories priced from £1.90, with some items exceeding £100.

In a statement to The Guardian, Jarjoura expressed his commitment to revitalizing the Claire’s brand, which he described as previously “dead.” Claire’s, originating from the US and introduced to the UK in 1996, faced challenges from online competitors in recent times.

Private equity firm Modella Capital enlisted Kroll to oversee administration after experiencing poor Christmas trading. This marked the second administration for Claire’s, with Modella acquiring the brand from administration in September last year.

Claire’s had closed 145 stores and cut approximately 1,000 jobs during the previous administration. Kroll confirmed the closure of all standalone Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland, with employees being made redundant. Discussions are ongoing with potential lessees for some of the sites.

Consumer expert Kat Cereda from Which? offered advice to customers with outstanding orders at Claire’s. She suggested exploring options such as section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for purchases over £100 made on credit cards, chargeback for smaller transactions, or submitting claims to Claire’s administrators as a last resort.
