Vernon Kay Opens Up About Childhood Criticism

Published on

Vernon Kay has shared insights into his personal challenges during his upbringing, revealing that he constantly faced criticism about his appearance, a situation that continues to bother him to this day.

The BBC Radio 2 host made these honest revelations on Susan Calman’s recent “Tracks of My Years” show, where they delved into his teenage years beyond his current radio fame in the UK. Despite now being a well-known voice on British airwaves, Vernon reflected on a time before his broadcasting success when he struggled with confidence.

Recalling his past, Vernon described himself as always resembling a giraffe or a beanpole, enduring taunts from the age of 11 due to a late start in puberty. The now 52-year-old, who hosts a popular mid-morning show on BBC Radio 2 and has had a diverse career in television and live presenting, revealed how these early experiences influenced his self-perception for years, leading him to try altering his physique.

Acknowledging the impact of external scrutiny on individuals, fellow presenter Jeremy Vine highlighted the challenge of maintaining confidence in the face of criticism, suggesting that such comments can be hurtful.

Agreeing with Jeremy, Vernon emphasized his frustration with the notion that people feel entitled to judge others based on appearance. He expressed his annoyance at the intrusion into personal matters, stating that others’ opinions about one’s appearance should not be a concern.

Recently, Vernon also discussed his health concerns and aging process, sharing his efforts to stay fit and healthy as he grows older. During his appearance on Fearne Cotton and Gary Davies’ show and later on his own program, he mentioned discussions about featuring songs related to his health issues, including bad knees and memory loss.

In response, Gary dismissed the focus on health, indicating a shift in the conversation. Vernon then updated on his physical well-being, noting an improvement in his back pain, sharing a positive change in his condition.

Beyond his broadcasting career, Vernon is recognized for his enduring marriage to fellow TV personality Tess Daly, with whom he has two daughters. The couple is esteemed for striking a balance between their prominent television careers and family life.
