Two individuals have lost their lives, and multiple others have sustained injuries following a vehicle crashing into a crowd in the heart of Leipzig, a city in eastern Germany, as reported by local media sources.

Emergency response units, including ambulances, police vehicles, fire trucks, and an emergency helicopter, swiftly arrived at the scene located on Grimmaische Street, a popular shopping thoroughfare connecting various landmarks to Leipzig’s market square.

Authorities have refrained from disclosing additional information, classifying the situation as “dynamic.” Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung expressed shock, extending solidarity to the families of the victims, confirming the tragic deaths of two individuals at the scene.

Mayor Jung emphasized the need for the police and investigative agencies to ascertain further details regarding the incident. The suspect has been apprehended, with assurances from Mayor Jung that there is no broader threat to public safety.

Witnesses observed a damaged Volkswagen SUV with a person on its roof speeding through a pedestrian zone, according to local broadcaster Radio Leipzig. Reports suggest at least eight individuals sustained injuries during the episode, with accounts of a driver traveling at high speeds along Grimmaische Street provided by Bild.

A police spokesperson confirmed that a vehicle had driven through the city center, resulting in several injuries. Approximately ten ambulances are present at the site, and the stores in the pedestrian precinct have been closed.

Local broadcaster MDR also reported the occurrence of a car collision with a crowd in Leipzig’s city center, specifically on Grimmaische Street, a notable shopping avenue linking various landmarks to the market square.
