The White House went into lockdown following a shooting incident near the Washington Monument. Law enforcement officers identified a suspicious individual who fired shots at Secret Service officers and was subsequently shot. The shooting occurred shortly after JD Vance passed through the area, as reported by Deputy Director Mathew C Quinn.
The Secret Service confirmed the incident, stating that it was an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. The altercation was between an armed individual and Secret Service Police, resulting in a young person being injured. The injured individual was swiftly transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.
The shooting incident unfolded on the National Mall, approximately a mile away from the White House, prompting a brief evacuation of the White House premises before the all-clear signal was issued. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington, DC, disclosed that an investigation is ongoing at the scene. Roads in the vicinity are expected to remain closed for several hours, as informed by the MPD, urging the public to avoid the area.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another attempt involving an alleged gunman, Cole Tomas Allen, who tried to breach security during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attended by President Trump. Allen faces charges of attempted murder of the President and two firearm-related offenses.
