An explosion that resulted in the death of a mother at her residence was reportedly a grenade attack carried out by her former partner, as revealed yesterday. The man involved also perished in the tragic incident, with neither of their identities disclosed yet. The explosion shook a serene suburban neighborhood in Bristol. Reports indicate that the woman’s son and two other relatives sustained minor injuries from the blast, received treatment, and have since been discharged from the hospital.
Police verified that they had received a call regarding a “domestic-related incident” shortly before the explosion occurred on Sunday. A neighbor, Wayne Smith, aged 58 and working as a carpenter, recounted the event, stating, “He showed up at her doorstep with a grenade and set it off, resulting in the fatalities.”
Residents in the area, including Mr. Smith, felt their residences tremble when the explosion occurred around 6:30 am on Sunday. Mr. Smith recounted, “Initially, I thought it was a gas explosion or a major car collision when I heard the boom. The entire house shook.”
Friends mourned the victim, who was reported to be employed at a tanning salon, describing her as “the most incredible woman they had ever known.” An acquaintance, who chose to remain unnamed, shared, “Just last week, she sounded so relieved that she was finally safe and away from her ex-partner.”
The authorities responded to the incident as the explosion took place inside the property on Sterncourt Road, Bristol, around 6:30 am, prompting a swift arrival of law enforcement and emergency personnel at the location. While the investigation is in its early stages, the police stated they are not seeking anyone in connection with the occurrence.
In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, Superintendent Matt Ebbs remarked, “A man and a woman lost their lives at the residence, and we are treating the explosion as suspicious. The families have been notified and are receiving support from trained officers. Our sympathies are with them during this difficult time.”
He added that a safety cordon was established to safeguard the public and facilitate investigative procedures at the scene. Specialist searches were conducted by the British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal as a precautionary measure. Residents within the cordon were evacuated to a temporary shelter, and cooperation from the public was acknowledged and appreciated.
The authorities anticipate the cordon to remain in place until at least the evening for safety reasons and pledged to provide updates as necessary. Emphasizing public safety as their top priority, they assured that the cordon would be lifted once it is deemed safe for residents to return to their homes.
