A teenager described as “vulnerable” tragically ended her life after disclosing a rape incident at her workplace, according to testimony at an inquest. Lauren Hewson’s family expressed frustration over the closure of the Cumbria police investigation, labeling it a “significant miscarriage of justice”. The inquest revealed that she was sexually assaulted and raped by a former colleague while serving as an apprentice at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
Although a man was arrested and later released on bail, no charges were filed due to insufficient evidence. BAE Systems stated that they have stringent safeguarding measures in place to support and protect their apprentices.
During the proceedings, Lauren’s sister, Bethany Hewson, voiced their disappointment, emphasizing the failure of both the legal system in holding the perpetrator accountable and the employer in ensuring the safety of a vulnerable young individual.
Following Lauren’s passing in August 2025, the police investigation continued, eventually concluding with no further action taken. Her family was officially informed of the conclusion recently. Testimony at the Cumbria Coroner’s Court indicated that Lauren had joined BAE Systems in 2023.
According to her sister’s testimony at the inquest, Lauren had transformed into a caring and independent young woman, but her demeanor drastically shifted in June of the previous year. She began isolating herself, avoiding interactions, neglecting her appearance, and experiencing significant weight loss.
Subsequently, she confided in her family about the abuse she endured, leading to police involvement. On her 18th birthday, she attempted suicide and was hospitalized but discharged after indicating she did not intend to harm herself further. Tragically, a week later, she was discovered unresponsive in her room and pronounced deceased.
In a statement during the inquest, Lauren’s mother expressed that Lauren felt her life was shattered and saw no way out, despite being a resilient individual. The Assistant Coroner confirmed her death as a deliberate act of suicide.
The family asserted that had appropriate workplace support been provided to Lauren, she might have felt empowered to report the incidents, potentially altering the tragic outcome. Both BAE Systems and the police issued statements post-inquest, emphasizing their commitment to thorough investigations and the safety of individuals within their care.
