“Met Gala 2022: Celebs Embrace Mirror Selfie Trend”

Published on

Nine years ago, Kylie Jenner took a well-known mirror selfie at the Met Gala, which has now sparked a trend among celebrities. At this year’s event on May 4th, numerous stars crowded into the bathroom mirrors for a group shot, including several A-listers.

The photo was captured by Indian model Bhavitha Mandava, who was at the forefront alongside Margot Robbie, Ayo Edebiri, members of the K-Pop band Blackpink, Gracie Abrams, and Rachel Sennott.

While Bhavitha sported a casual top and jeans, styled by Chanel, the others were still dressed in their red carpet attire. Gracie’s gold Chanel dress, inspired by Gustav Klimt’s painting “The Woman in Gold,” was mostly obscured by a no smoking sign in the mirror.

Similarly, Margot Robbie’s champagne dress by Chanel, which reportedly took 761 hours to make, was covered by the group, with only a glimpse of Ayo Edebiri’s white dress visible.

The mirror selfie bore a striking resemblance to one taken by Kylie Jenner in 2017, where she was surrounded by her sisters and fellow stars. The gala’s theme that year was a tribute to Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garcons, named ‘Art of the In-Between’, with Kylie donning a fringed Versace outfit and a blonde wig.

Notable figures like Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Paris Jackson, Lily Aldridge, Ashton Sanders, Luka Sabbat, and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs also joined in the bathroom selfie tradition at the Met Gala.

Many celebrities opt for pictures in the gender-neutral bathrooms, where the event’s social media restrictions are more lenient. Over time, other stars like Ashley Graham, Hailey Bieber, Cara Delevingne, and Bella Hadid have also taken similar mirror selfies.

Contrary to the bathroom photo trend, Anna Wintour is unlikely to partake as she has her private restroom with a dedicated security guard. This year, several notable celebrities chose to skip the event altogether. Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, Callum Turner, Dua Lipa, Sydney Sweeney, and Zendaya were among those absent for various reasons, such as focusing on tours, albums, or personal holidays.

Additionally, Bella Hadid, Taraji P. Henson, and Lisa Ann Walter avoided the gala due to Jeff Bezos’ involvement as the lead sponsor. The trio declined attendance in protest of Bezos’ ties to ICE.
