In a court hearing, it was revealed that a man described as “angry” fatally stabbed his partner and then caused a gas explosion at their residence in east London. Clifton George, aged 45, is facing allegations of killing 46-year-old Annabel Rook following a dispute at their home on Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, on June 17, 2025.
Although George has confessed to causing Rook’s death by admitting to manslaughter, he refutes the murder accusations against him, as conveyed to jurors at Snaresbrook Crown Court. The prosecution, led by William Emlyn Jones KC, stated that the stabbing occurred amid the couple’s deteriorating relationship, after Rook insisted that George vacate their home. Allegations suggest that George then formulated a plan to end his own life and cause a house explosion.
Reportedly, George retrieved a knife from the kitchen and proceeded to stab Rook in the living room, displaying intense anger and distress thereafter. Subsequently, he ignited a fire within the property by lighting a gas canister, resulting in a substantial explosion that damaged the residence and alarmed neighbors.
Emlyn Jones recounted the events of the night, detailing how George engaged in physical violence with Rook, culminating in the fatal stabbing. The prosecutor emphasized George’s irate state, attributing the crime to his loss of temper and subsequent actions.
Rook, the daughter of retired Old Bailey judge Peter Rook, was discovered with multiple stab wounds after the explosion, while George was found in the backyard attempting self-harm with a broken glass shard. George admitted to the authorities that he had killed Rook, expressing remorse for his actions during a police interview.
Despite acknowledging his responsibility for Rook’s death, George contests the murder charge, maintaining his plea of guilt to manslaughter. The trial is ongoing, with jurors tasked to assess the circumstances leading to the tragic incident, including the complexities of the couple’s relationship. Emlyn Jones underscored the need for evidence from various sources, including the couple’s family and friends, as well as electronic communications, to elucidate the dynamics of their partnership as it unraveled over time.
George continues to deny the murder allegations while admitting to manslaughter. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
