Amid escalating tensions between the UK and Russia, a prominent Russian warship has been closely monitored by a series of Royal Navy vessels for weeks. The Admiral Grigorovich frigate was under constant surveillance by patrol ships HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn as it navigated near the UK coast for an entire month.
This extensive operation, which took place in the North Sea and west of the UK, including areas near the Galloper wind farm off the Suffolk coast, was described as one of the most intense shadowing operations conducted by the Royal Navy in the past decade. The heightened threat level from Russia prompted this vigilant monitoring by the UK.
A Royal Navy spokesperson confirmed that patrol ships, a tanker, and naval air assets closely followed the movements of the Admiral Grigorovich and its accompanying ships throughout April. The Russian frigate escorted vessels traveling to and from the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Baltic regions, including a submarine and multiple merchant and support ships.
The Admiral Grigorovich also made stops near strategic locations, such as the Galloper wind farm, for refueling and resupplying. This operation coincided with Russia’s increased use of its air force and navy to test NATO’s response to its activities near European territories.
In a separate incident last month, UK and Norwegian forces intercepted a covert operation by three Russian submarines, including Akula-class and GUGI vessels, near critical underwater infrastructure north of the UK. While the submarines were conducting surveillance activities, no damage was reported.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding potential threats to vital infrastructure, emphasizing that any attempt to harm these assets would have severe consequences.
Recent years have seen repeated instances of Russian spy planes approaching UK airspace, prompting British warplanes to intercept and deter them. The Royal Navy’s successful monitoring operation was commended by Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Steve Moorhouse, highlighting the professionalism and operational readiness demonstrated by the crews.
