A mother had the touching opportunity to reunite with her deceased daughter’s hand by meeting the recipient of a limb transplant. Jackie Kirwan, aged 65, expressed that her daughter Georgie Peterson would have been thrilled to know she made a significant impact on someone’s life. Georgie, aged 33, from Liverpool, tragically passed away in August due to a severe illness causing debilitating seizures.
Georgie had been a registered organ donor since the age of 17. Following her passing, Jackie made the decision to donate her daughter’s limbs. One of Georgie’s hands was received by Kim Smith, who had lost her hands and feet due to sepsis in 2017. After exchanging letters, the two women decided to meet, describing the experience as deeply emotional.
During their second meeting, Jackie fondly referred to Georgie as their “human sunshine.” She mentioned Georgie’s belief that the soul is more important than the body. Meeting Kim was a surreal experience for Jackie, with both expressing gratitude and a strong emotional connection.
Kim, now 64, shared that it is uncommon for a donor’s family and recipient to meet. After reaching out to Georgie’s family, Kim finally connected with Jackie. Their emotional first meeting in March led to a warm relationship, with Kim expressing joy at staying in touch with Jackie.
Georgie had been battling a rare brain disorder called peri ventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH), which led to severe epilepsy. Despite her health challenges, Georgie pursued a degree in English, enjoyed various activities, but was limited by the severity of her epilepsy.
Following Georgie’s passing in August 2025, Jackie was surprised to learn that limb donation was an option. Despite initial hesitation, Jackie agreed, emphasizing Georgie’s belief in the importance of the soul. Kim’s heartfelt letter expressing gratitude led to their meaningful meeting, where Jackie found solace in knowing Georgie’s gift had a positive impact on Kim’s life.
Kim Smith, an advocate for Sepsis Research, lost her limbs due to a severe infection in 2017. After a successful left hand transplant, Kim embraced her new reality, emphasizing Georgie’s gift as a blessing. Together, Jackie and Kim aim to raise awareness about sepsis, epilepsy, and honor Georgie’s legacy.
