British Cruise Ship Passengers Affected by Deadly Hantavirus

Published on

A British individual fell seriously ill after exposure to Hantavirus on a cruise ship, describing the experience as a memorable journey before embarking on the MV Hondius. Martin Anstee, a 56-year-old retired police officer, is currently in isolation at a hospital in the Netherlands following a medical evacuation from the ship. He was one of three individuals evacuated from the vessel and flown to the Netherlands after waiting several days for removal due to a suspected Hantavirus outbreak linked to three deaths.

The cruise line operator revealed that 30 passengers disembarked from the MV Hondius on St Helena on April 24 after the initial death on board. Among those who left were seven British nationals, but only two of them, who returned to the UK, are now in isolation. Authorities in South Africa and Europe are actively tracing contacts of these passengers who disembarked the ship. The series of unfortunate events began when a 69-year-old Dutch man passed away on April 11 onboard the MV Hondius, followed by his wife falling ill and passing away on April 25 in South Africa.

A Dutch flight attendant who had contact with the deceased woman in South Africa is currently in isolation in Amsterdam after displaying potential Hantavirus symptoms. Additionally, a German passenger from the cruise ship also tragically passed away on May 2. Martin Anstee, who was part of the guiding team on the cruise, expressed his enthusiasm for the wildlife photography-focused journey that commenced on April 1 from Argentina. However, his experience took a turn for the worse as he ended up seriously ill after the Hantavirus outbreak on the ship.

An investigation in Argentina is looking into the possibility that the Dutch couple who initially died may have been infected with the virus during a bird-watching trip near where the ship docked. In the midst of these events, a US travel blogger shared updates with followers about their journey to the Canary Islands for testing and medical care. The blogger also clarified misconceptions about the ship, emphasizing its high cleaning standards and biosecurity protocols.

Reports indicate that individuals in at least three US states are under observation for potential Hantavirus infections. Despite these challenges, the majority of passengers and crew onboard the expedition vessel remain in good health and spirits. The priority for everyone involved is to ensure safety and eventually return home to their families.
