“UK Households Hit by Record Oil Company Profits”

Published on

Oil companies have reportedly earned an average of £102 per UK household in “war profits” during the first quarter of this year, according to research. A study by the End Fuel Poverty Coalition reveals that energy corporations have amassed £3 billion in profits in the UK since January, with a significant portion attributed to a spike in oil prices following the onset of the Iran conflict in late February. Globally, these companies have generated a total of £26.2 billion in profits.

One prominent player in the industry, Shell, faced criticism after announcing profits of nearly £5.1 billion in the first three months of this year, largely influenced by the Iran war. The company, along with other oil and gas producers, has benefited from the surge in wholesale oil and gas prices. Shell’s profits more than doubled compared to the previous quarter and increased from £4.1 billion in the same period a year ago.

Simon Francis, a representative from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, expressed concerns about the substantial profits being made by energy firms, highlighting that a significant portion of every energy bill goes towards company profits. He emphasized that the ongoing war profits are adding to the financial burden on UK households, calling for a shift towards increased energy efficiency and renewable energy sources to break free from the dependence on fluctuating fossil fuel prices.

The impact of the Middle East conflict on UK households is evident in the rising prices of petrol and diesel. The RAC reported that the national average price of petrol has reached 157.56p per liter, the highest since April 20, up from 132.83p before the conflict began. Diesel prices have also surged, from 142.38p to 188.07p per liter.

Looking ahead, industry experts predict that Ofgem’s energy price cap will increase by an average of £201 per year starting July. Shell, with investments in seven refineries, recorded profits of around £1.5 billion. The End Fuel Poverty Coalition monitors profits from 30 energy companies, with recent data reflecting the impact of the Iran conflict and disruptions in oil and gas markets.

A survey by Survation revealed that 74% of the public disapprove of oil and gas companies profiting from the energy crisis triggered by the Iran war. Calls for a transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources have intensified, with concerns raised about the financial strain on consumers and the need for support to manage rising energy costs.

Shell defended its increased profits, citing seasonal trends and tax considerations, while emphasizing the importance of dividends to shareholders. Rival BP also faced scrutiny after reporting a significant rise in first-quarter profits. Market prices for Brent crude oil, jet fuel, and gas have surged due to production disruptions and ongoing tensions in the region, with crude oil prices hitting a four-year high before easing slightly but remaining elevated.
