“Passengers on Ill-Fated Cruise Ship Organize BBQ Amid Hantavirus Outbreak”

Published on

Passengers aboard the ill-fated cruise ship affected by the Hantavirus reportedly organized a large barbecue, seemingly unaffected by the situation, as shared by a traveler still on the vessel. The MV Hondius has tragically recorded three deaths following a suspected outbreak of the virus. Among the victims, a British individual remains in critical condition in a South African intensive care unit, while another, retired police officer Martin Anstee, is currently stable in a Dutch hospital.

The World Health Organization has confirmed five cases of hantavirus from the ship, with a total of eight cases officially reported. Health authorities are urgently seeking individuals who disembarked on St Helena in the South Atlantic for tracking and monitoring.

The luxury cruise liner is en route to the Canary Islands and is anticipated to dock over the upcoming weekend. A French passenger expressed growing concerns among guests but assured that they are not confined to their cabins, although the enforcement of mask-wearing is in effect.

The passenger mentioned, “People are not in panic mode, but the uncertainty is becoming burdensome, especially since our destination is unknown. We dine together in the restaurant with social distancing measures in place, although this protocol has only been implemented recently; we sit at separate tables in a staggered manner.”

Despite the circumstances, a significant barbecue event took place on the ship, suggesting a sense of normalcy. British passengers are expected to undergo a 45-day self-isolation period upon their return, according to health officials.

Among the passengers who departed the vessel, seven were holidaymakers, while a Dutch man passed away, and his wife subsequently tested positive for hantavirus and also succumbed to the illness.

Oceanwide Expeditions released a statement detailing the ship’s journey from Cape Verde to Granadilla in Tenerife, affirming the absence of symptomatic individuals onboard. They are actively coordinating with authorities regarding the ship’s arrival, quarantine procedures, and health screenings for all guests.

The cruise company confirmed that 114 passengers boarded in Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, with 30 passengers leaving in Saint Helena on April 24. Efforts are underway to contact all guests who embarked or disembarked at various stops since March 20.

Nicola Anstee, the wife of Martin Anstee, shared that her husband’s condition had been tumultuous but is now stable and recovering. She described the experience as challenging due to the rapid progression of the virus.

In a recent development, a man who was not onboard the affected cruise ship but shared a flight with an infected individual has reportedly contracted the deadly hantavirus. Health officials are closely monitoring the French passenger, who unknowingly traveled with an infected Dutch passenger displaying symptoms at the time.

This transformation of the cruise ship’s events highlights the ongoing challenges faced by passengers and the evolving situation surrounding the hantavirus outbreak.
