“Reform Candidate Cites Nigerian Scam for Social Media Controversy”

Published on

A candidate seeking election as a Reform councillor in a crucial area, despite facing initial rejection for racist content on social media, has claimed he fell victim to a scam orchestrated by individuals from Nigeria.

Graham Holland was originally disqualified as a candidate by Reform due to “inappropriate social media activity,” but was later allowed to run after presenting what the party deemed as “new evidence.”

Holland has now disclosed his side of the story, asserting that he was targeted in a sophisticated scam originating from Africa. The former Conservative councillor mentioned his religious beliefs as a born-again Christian and referred to the opinion of his tech-savvy friend Gareth, whom he consulted at the Chunky Teapot café.

Running in the contested Bexley region in south-east London for Reform, Holland was accused of sharing controversial posts implying negative sentiments about Muslims. However, Holland, an 81-year-old retired Foreign Office employee, explained to the Mirror that his social media accounts were compromised by scammers from Nigeria who posted offensive tweets on his behalf.

When questioned about the nature of the tweets, Holland clarified that his account had been infiltrated by external parties who sent out the contentious messages without his knowledge. He attributed the breach to Nigerian scammers who manipulated his online presence.

Despite facing rejection initially, Holland eventually secured the nomination from Reform to run for the Blackfen and Lamorbey ward in the London Borough of Bexley. He emphasized that he provided evidence, including a WhatsApp message from his computer expert, confirming his innocence in posting the contentious tweets.

Responding to skepticism surrounding his claims, Holland highlighted his religious beliefs and personal integrity, stating that he would not propagate inflammatory content. He also emphasized his amicable relationships with individuals of various faiths, including Muslims.

Holland recounted discussing the cyber incident with his friend Gareth at the Chunky Teapot café and shared a message from Gareth suggesting that the hackers had created a fake account using Holland’s identity to post the offensive content.

Reform’s leader expressed confidence in their vetting process, indicating improvements in handling such issues effectively. The party acknowledged past shortcomings but assured that they were addressing concerns diligently.

Recent revelations exposed Reform’s recruitment tactics and unveiled controversial views held by some candidates. A spokesperson for Reform UK confirmed that Holland successfully passed subsequent vetting after presenting compelling evidence proving his lack of involvement in the contentious social media posts.
