The connection was unearthed by the family history platform My Heritage, which determined that Attenborough is the ninth cousin, three times removed, of Darwin.

Charles Darwin, known for his groundbreaking 1859 book “On the Origin of Species,” introduced the concept of species evolving over time through natural selection, revolutionizing scientific understanding of nature, ancestry, and adaptation. The genealogical tie between Attenborough and Darwin can be traced back to 16th-century English gentry, John Gifford, Sr. and Joan Brydges Gifford, who resided at the manor of Itchell in Crondall, Hampshire. Their daughters, Anne and Mary Gifford, represent the split in the family lineage, with Anne becoming a direct ancestor of Attenborough and Mary of Darwin.
