“Jamelia’s Dating Rules: Daughters’ Boyfriends Beware”

Published on

Singer and former panelist on Loose Women, Jamelia, has shared that she has two specific questions she asks her daughters’ boyfriends once their relationships get serious. Jamelia Davis, known for her hit song “Superstar” in the early 2000s, is a British R&B artist.

The outspoken television personality, a regular on ITV’s Loose Women, is vocal about raising her four daughters – Teja, 24, Tiani, 20, True, 8, and Jream, 3.

In a recent episode of the BBC Bitesize Parenting Teens podcast hosted by Kerry Godliman and psychologist Dr. Lucy Foulkes, Jamelia delved into discussions about adolescent relationships and navigating sensitive topics with teenagers.

During the podcast, Jamelia admitted to “interviewing” her older daughters’ partners by asking two specific questions once the relationships reach a significant stage.

She explained, “If you’re serious about my daughter, you have to come and have a chat with me. It’s like a small interview or something in between. Some have failed to meet my standards. I ensure my daughters are present for these conversations. It’s just a discussion, but I do inquire about their thoughts on sex and whether they’ve discussed contraception. If they can’t handle these conversations maturely, it’s a red flag.”

Jamelia also touched on the impact of social media on her daughters’ body image and how she guides them through the online world.

Expressing her concerns, she said, “My biggest worry is the influence of social media on body image. As teenagers, we discussed how magazines affected us, but now our girls are exposed to such content constantly. The conflicting messages they receive, especially on platforms like TikTok, can be overwhelming. It’s crucial for them to form their own self-image before society shapes it. I ensure we have real conversations, even sharing memes and discussing them in person. I want to be a supportive and safe space for my daughters.”

Dr. Lucy Foulkes added, “There’s more diversity in beauty standards on social media nowadays, but young people need to understand that what they see online isn’t always reality.”
