Outrage Grows Over Retailer Firings Amid Rising Shoplifting

Published on

After Sainsbury’s terminated an employee for intervening during a theft incident, Mirror readers have shared their opinions on the controversial decision. Gary MacArthur was fired after 15 years of service for confronting a thief attempting to steal high-end champagne brands at a branch in West Wickham, south London. Sainsbury’s cited gross misconduct as the reason for his dismissal for not following the company’s guidelines on handling such situations.

This incident follows a similar case at Waitrose where employee Walker Smith was also dismissed for preventing a shoplifter from stealing Easter eggs, violating company policy. The public and politicians expressed outrage over these actions, leading to calls for a boycott.

In a separate incident, a long-serving Morrisons store manager, Sean Egan, was let go for confronting a repeated shoplifter who turned aggressive. The manager received support from Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley, emphasizing the importance of safe interventions by store staff when necessary.

The surge in shoplifting in England and Wales has hit a 20-year peak, with over 530,000 offenses reported in the year ending March 2025, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. Retail establishments report approximately 1,300 instances of violence and abuse towards staff daily.

Sainsbury’s decision to dismiss MacArthur came shortly after he helped save the store’s security guard’s life by performing CPR when the guard suffered a stroke. The thief took advantage of the situation to commit the theft in December, leading to MacArthur’s termination in March after an investigation.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s emphasized the escalating incidents of violence and theft in their stores, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures and government support. The company reiterated its focus on prioritizing the safety of everyone in their stores and preventing situations from escalating further.

MacArthur expressed his devastation over the company’s decision, recounting the events of the day which led to his dismissal. Despite his efforts to confront the shoplifter and secure the stolen items, the thief returned to the store, escalating the situation by throwing bottles and necessitating police intervention.
