A family is mourning an unimaginable tragedy following the death of a nine-year-old boy who was struck by a falling tree shortly after his birthday. Zakaria Bel Qaid tragically lost his life in a rare accident when a tree collapsed at his elementary school in Winthrop, near Boston, Massachusetts, injuring two others.
Zakaria, a skilled skier, met his untimely demise while playing with his sister and her friend, as his family revealed on an Instagram page showcasing his talents. Described as a loving, confident, and spirited individual, Zakaria had a passion for skiing that was central to his life.
Following the incident, which occurred after school hours, the Melrose School Committee confirmed that the injured adult and child have been discharged from the hospital. The school is providing support to students and staff during this difficult period. The family has requested donations to be directed to Green Mountain Academy, a ski and snowboard training club.
