The main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, Christian Brueckner, declined a request from British authorities for an interview. This refusal came after the UK detectives did not disclose the evidence they had against him.
A specialized team of Scotland Yard investigators has been diligently working on the case against Brueckner and had sought evidence from German authorities following his release from prison last September. According to reports, there is confidence within the team that they can compile a strong case to seek charges against the German national before the upcoming 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance.
Despite potential evidence gathering, the extradition of German citizens to the UK is not feasible. Brueckner, who remains unemployed, utilized his legal rights in Germany to reject an interview with Metropolitan Police detectives last year.
Efforts were made by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to have Brueckner appear for questioning through an “International Letter of Request,” however, this request was declined by the German courts as the case details were not disclosed by the detectives.
Brueckner’s legal representative, Friedrich Fulscher, expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the specific allegations against his client. Brueckner maintains his innocence in connection to the crime. The request for an interview with Brueckner seems to be the last resort for British authorities.
In an interview last year, Brueckner expressed his desire to end the alleged persecution against him. He questioned the lack of DNA evidence linking him to the crime scene and emphasized his denial of involvement.
Legal experts suggest that while the Metropolitan Police could press charges, Brueckner cannot be apprehended in Germany. However, extradition to Portugal, an EU nation, remains a possibility, leading to ongoing discussions among authorities.
Past evidence tying Brueckner to the case includes his phone being located near the McCanns’ apartment and previous convictions for child abuse. Witnesses had also provided his name to both German and British police in 2008.
Despite circumstantial connections, no forensic evidence linking Brueckner to Madeleine’s disappearance has been found thus far. Madeleine vanished from Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007 while her parents were dining nearby. Brueckner was serving a prison sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape case when last September.
