“Hospital Staff Criticized for Accessing Attack Victims’ Records”

Published on

Hospital staff are facing criticism for improperly accessing the medical records of victims involved in the Southport attack. Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice da Silva Aguiar tragically lost their lives during a Taylor Swift-themed dance event on July 29, 2024, while others were severely injured by the assailant, Axel Rudakubana, who received a 52-year prison sentence.

Following the incident, a routine audit conducted by the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group uncovered that 48 staff members had accessed patient records without valid reasons, a fact that was not disclosed to the affected individuals until recently. Survivors like Leanne Lucas, a dance class instructor and patient at UHLG, expressed shock and dismay at the breach of privacy, labeling it as an attempted cover-up.

In response, the hospital trust denied any cover-up attempts, stating that the initial plan was to inform the affected individuals. However, the leadership changed their stance in 2025, believing that informing the patients could lead to further trauma. Legal representatives for the survivors condemned the breach, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency.

This incident of unauthorized access to patient records mirrors a similar case at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, where staff accessed records of victims in another attack. At UHLG, an internal report flagged 64 suspicious access instances, with disciplinary actions ranging from counseling to warnings taken against the 48 staff involved.

UHLG’s chief executive issued a formal apology to the victims, acknowledging the breach of patient confidentiality as unacceptable. The trust reported the incident to relevant authorities and implemented digital solutions to prevent future breaches. The Information Commissioner’s Office confirmed being notified about the breaches but did not launch an independent investigation, citing satisfaction with the trust’s actions.

The incident underscores the importance of safeguarding patient privacy and the repercussions for those who violate it.
