A father shared the heartbreaking story of his son’s battle with meningitis, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the sixth form student. Sean Walters took to social media to remember his son Lewis, who tragically passed away at an intensive care unit in Reading, Berkshire.
In a poignant post, Sean described Lewis’s rapid decline from feeling unwell to developing sepsis, despite the dedicated care he received from the ICU team. Lewis was remembered as a kind-hearted and humorous individual who cherished including everyone in his life.
The community of Henley-on-Thames and Henley College in Oxfordshire, where Lewis attended, mourned his untimely death. Additionally, two other pupils from Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre were undergoing treatment for meningitis.
Sean emphasized Lewis’s love for his family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact his passing would have on many. The principal of Henley College extended condolences to Lewis’s family and friends, while the UK Health Security Agency confirmed that the meningitis strain was not linked to a recent outbreak.
Dr. Rachel Mearkle emphasized the rarity of large meningitis outbreaks and reassured the public about the low risk of transmission. The UKHSA provided information to affected schools about meningitis symptoms, urging vigilance and prompt medical attention if concerned.
