The body of a missing teenager from West Virginia was found at the residence where her stepfather was accused of mistreating her, two weeks before her remains were recovered. The 16-year-old, identified as Shalyn Harvey, was discovered at a property in Big Chimney, West Virginia, on May 15. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identity of the remains on May 18.

Shortly after Harvey was reported missing, her stepfather, James Truman, 52, was arrested on unrelated charges of incest and sexual abuse by a parent or guardian. The teenager went missing on May 4 and was last seen in the vicinity where her body was later located.

Authorities mentioned that she was believed to have entered a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck from the early 2000s before her disappearance. Following an investigation, a search warrant was obtained for the property in Big Chimney, where Shalyn had been residing with her mother and stepfather.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on Harvey’s body, and law enforcement has not disclosed the cause of death yet, treating her passing as a homicide. Truman, held on a $100,000 bond at Kanawha County Jail, has not been charged in connection with his stepdaughter’s death. The case has been forwarded to Kanawha County Circuit Court.

The latest update from the police stated that during a search on May 15, female remains were found at the property on Offutt Drive. The West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially identified the remains as those of 16-year-old Shalyn Shantel Harvey on May 18. The investigation is ongoing.
