A survivor of hantavirus, Shaina Montiel, 38, recently recounted her harrowing experience with the illness that left her with a lasting phobia. Having contracted the virus over three decades ago during a cruise ship outbreak, Shaina vividly remembers the rare and severe symptoms she endured as a five-year-old. Initially misdiagnosed with meningitis and leukemia, she was eventually diagnosed with the haemorrhagic strain of the virus after a prolonged hospital stay.
The illness caused excruciating pain for Shaina, to the point where even the slightest touch was unbearable. Following her recovery, she underwent two years of monitoring due to the limited knowledge surrounding the condition at the time. Despite over 30 years passing without encountering another hantavirus case, Shaina decided to share her story as awareness of the illness grows.
Reflecting on her traumatic experience, Shaina, now a special education teacher, recounted the intense vomiting and rectal haemorrhaging she endured, which led to her diagnosis being meticulously documented by doctors due to its rarity. She struggled with health anxiety and developed a fear of vomiting post-recovery, delving into infectious disease literature to better understand her ordeal.
Shaina’s illness, initially mistaken for the flu, escalated rapidly, resulting in uncontrollable bleeding and hospitalization. Although the source of her infection was unclear, it was suspected to be linked to exposure to animal feces in her backyard. Despite the temporary health scare, Shaina did not experience any long-term effects but grappled with anxiety and fear stemming from her traumatic encounter with hantavirus.
As the public awareness of hantavirus increases, Shaina hopes her story will shed light on the seriousness of the illness and offer support to those currently battling it. Emphasizing the importance of knowledge and vigilance, she expressed concern over the potential risks associated with the virus, urging others to stay informed and vigilant.
The resurgence of hantavirus in public discourse has prompted Shaina to share her journey, aiming to raise awareness and support for individuals and families facing similar challenges. She remains optimistic for the recovery of those affected by the virus, emphasizing the importance of education and proactive measures to prevent further cases.
