An elderly man who had been declared dead was rushed back to the hospital when workers at a funeral home discovered signs of life in him.
Juraci Rosa Alves was initially pronounced dead by a doctor due to respiratory failure on Saturday, May 16. After the declaration, the 88-year-old was transferred to a funeral home for standard post-mortem procedures.
During the preparation of his body for the wake, staff at the funeral home noticed movements and signs of life. Jacqueline Brogiato, the nursing supervisor at the funeral home, mentioned that upon arrival at the facility, they observed unusual movements in his abdomen, indicating possible breathing.
Upon realizing that Mr. Alves was still alive, immediate medical assistance was provided, and he was swiftly taken to a healthcare facility after being sedated and intubated by a doctor.
Mr. Alves was then transferred to a hospital in Presidente Prudente, Brazil, where he is currently receiving medical care.
Authorities have labeled the incident as a “failure to provide assistance” and are investigating the case. The identity of the medical professional who declared Alves deceased has not been disclosed.
Alves, a resident of Emilianópolis, is currently in a serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit, receiving necessary treatment.
A spokesperson for the family, Carlos Alberto Carneiro, mentioned that the hospital treating Mr. Juraci indicated that the situation may have exacerbated his condition due to his age and the time spent without proper care.
The initial hospital in Presidente Bernardes has announced an internal investigation into the matter and is willing to provide any required clarifications.
