“Grenfell Fire Investigation Nears Charging Decision”

Published on

Metropolitan Police detectives investigating the Grenfell fire tragedy are set to hand over their case files to the Crown Prosecution Service in September, aiming for a charging decision before the tenth anniversary next June. The ongoing investigation, known as Operation Northleigh, involves 57 individuals and 20 organizations as suspects in connection with the fire that claimed the lives of 72 individuals in June 2017. Allegations being explored include misconduct in public office, corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, fraud, and breaches of health and safety regulations.

Officer in Overall Command, Garry Moncrieff, mentioned that substantial evidence has been gathered, and they are on schedule to submit the files to the CPS by the end of September. This intensive investigation, which lasted over 14 months at Grenfell Tower, is a significant step towards potential legal proceedings.

While acknowledging the significance of this milestone for the affected families, Moncrieff highlighted the emotional toll of the prolonged process on them. He emphasized that despite reaching this crucial juncture, the investigation will continue, possibly leading to further inquiries.

In preparation for a potential trial, authorities have initiated the construction of a detailed model of parts of the tower, a project estimated to cost over £2 million. The number of suspects involved may fluctuate slightly before the finalization of the case files. If criminal charges are approved and a trial proceeds, it is anticipated that it may not commence before 2029.

To date, the Metropolitan Police have furnished 15 out of 20 files, containing over 2.2 million words, to the CPS for review and guidance. This extensive investigation, involving 220 investigators, has been described as one of the largest and most intricate in the history of Scotland Yard, costing at least £150.6 million. The meticulous examination of evidence includes gathering more than 27,000 items from the tower.

The probe also delves into the roles of various entities, including the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, tenant management organizations, construction companies, and suppliers of building materials. The comprehensive investigation aims to ensure accountability and justice for the victims and their families affected by the tragic events of June 2017.

Grenfell United, a group representing bereaved families and survivors, has emphasized the urgent need for justice, highlighting the prolonged wait as unbearable. The slow progress has been acknowledged, with calls for swift decisions on criminal charges to provide closure and justice for those affected by the devastating fire.

The Home Office has allocated over £30 million in special grant funding to support Operation Northleigh since 2017. Additionally, the Metropolitan Police are awaiting confirmation of further government funding to continue the investigation.

Notably, a High Court ruling in 2022 held the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and tenant management organizations liable for the fatalities in the fire. Subsequently, a civil settlement involving 900 claimants, comprising bereaved families, survivors, and residents, was reached, marking a significant step towards addressing the aftermath of the tragedy.

The process of demolishing the tower commenced in September of the previous year, marking the beginning of a two-year endeavor. A memorial banner displaying the heartfelt message “Forever in our hearts” remains on the site as a poignant reminder of the lives lost, symbolizing the ongoing pursuit of justice and remembrance.
