“Absences Highlight Strain at NE Governors Meeting”

Published on

A University of Prince Edward Island political scientist noted that the majority of key leaders were absent from the annual roundtable meeting of northeastern U.S. governors and Canadian premiers, attributing it to the ongoing cross-border trade tensions. Only Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz represented Canada at the 47th annual conference of the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers, hosted by Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, who was the sole state governor in attendance.

The absence of other high-level Canadian leaders, such as New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham, was explained by their focus on domestic priorities and scheduling conflicts. Quebec sent its International Relations Minister Christopher Skeete in place of Premier Christine Frechette, who is preparing for a provincial election.

The declining attendance at the conference over recent years has been evident, with fewer premiers and governors participating in each successive event. The ongoing trade war between the U.S. and Canada, initiated by President Donald Trump, has added strain to the relationship, potentially impacting the relevance of such gatherings.

Despite the challenges, the importance of maintaining connections and cooperation between provinces and states was emphasized during the conference. Discussions revolved around joint opportunities in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, energy security, infrastructure development, and economic growth. The value of such engagements was highlighted by the opportunity they provide for leaders to gain insights into the affairs of other regions.

While current circumstances may have deterred some leaders from attending, the potential for a future shift in the trade landscape underscores the significance of nurturing intergovernmental relationships for long-term cooperation beyond the present challenges.
