Act Now to Save Money on Mobile and Broadband Bills

Published on

Millions of mobile and broadband customers have the opportunity to avoid upcoming price increases by taking action in advance. Currently, an estimated eight million broadband users and 14 million mobile subscribers are not under contract and could potentially save money by exploring other options, as reported by Uswitch.

One common mistake is passively allowing bills to rise without checking for better deals elsewhere or negotiating with current providers. This issue is particularly relevant as major providers like O2, Virgin, Three, and Vodafone are planning to increase prices starting in April.

To comply with regulations, mobile and broadband companies are now required to clearly inform customers of any mid-contract price hikes in monetary terms rather than tying them to inflation. According to Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at Uswitch, consumers could collectively save £633 by taking action promptly.

Switching providers can lead to significant savings, with broadband customers potentially saving an average of £329 and mobile users an average of £304 by switching from handset contracts to SIM-only deals. The current market is highly competitive, resulting in attractive deals, especially in broadband services.

If you are out of contract, chances are you are overpaying for your mobile and broadband services. Before comparing prices, evaluate your current usage to avoid paying for unnecessary allowances. Utilize comparison websites like Uswitch, Compare the Market, Confused.com, or MoneySupermarket to find the most cost-effective deals.

After comparing prices online, consider switching to a cheaper provider or renegotiating with your current one. Politely discuss any better deals you have found elsewhere with your current provider to see if they can match or beat the offer. If not, consider switching and explore cashback options for additional incentives.

Individuals receiving benefits may be eligible for social tariffs, with broadband starting at £12 per month and mobile at £10. Eligibility criteria vary among suppliers, but benefits like Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Personal Independence Payment, and Attendance Allowance may qualify.

Research by Broadband Genie indicates that around 5.3 million households in the UK are eligible for social tariffs, yet nearly 4.8 million are not taking advantage of them. Contact your broadband or mobile provider to inquire about eligibility for social tariffs and potential savings.
