“Activist Celebrates 3rd Anniversary with River Avon”

Published on

An individual is commemorating her third wedding anniversary after getting married to a body of water – the River Avon. Meg Avon, aged 29, exchanged vows with the River Avon located in the South West of England.

The Bristol-native researcher, activist, and writer, Meg, shared insights on how she and her beloved river continue to nurture their relationship as they mark three years together. Their marriage ceremony on June 17, 2023, was a joyful occasion aimed at both celebrating their union and drawing attention to water pollution issues.

Meg, previously known as Meg Trump, affirms that her bond with the river remains strong even three years later. She expressed her ongoing commitment by regularly swimming in the river, even during the winter months, which she finds exhilarating. Meg stated, “I am dedicated to this relationship, and every moment spent in the water is truly enriching.”

Continuing her deep connection with the river, Meg has explored new ways to engage with it, from swimming at various locations along its course to engaging with individuals from diverse art and environmental communities.

The enthusiastic wild swimmer emphasized the importance of their joint efforts in advocating for water conservation, especially following the recent airing of the C4 documentary ‘Dirty Business,’ shedding light on the sewage crisis in the UK.

Meg expressed her appreciation for the acknowledgment their cause has received, noting the relatability of their local story to a broader national narrative. She highlighted the significance of making complex legal issues more accessible and relatable to the public through personal stories.

As a member of the campaign group Conham Bathers, Meg and her colleagues initially aimed to secure official bathing water status for the River Avon, a goal hindered by the river’s poor water quality.

Addressing the challenges posed by the river’s water quality, Meg stressed the importance of raising awareness and remaining hopeful for positive change. She emphasized the beauty of the river, encouraging individuals, especially the youth, to engage with nature as a means of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with the environment.

Furthermore, Meg’s group is actively pursuing legal recognition of personhood rights for the River Avon, which would bolster conservation efforts and potentially lead to a formal renewal of vows that could legally recognize their union.

In discussions with councillors across the country, Meg aims to establish a groundbreaking cross-council charter in the UK, recognizing the rights of the River Avon as a significant step towards enhancing its protection and conservation.
