“Activist Raises Concerns Over British Woman’s Dubai Trial”

Published on

A human rights activist who previously faced imprisonment in Dubai has expressed concerns about the trial of a British woman accused of fatally stabbing a man in Dubai. Brooke George, a 23-year-old from Gravesend, Kent, is facing charges of premeditated murder in the United Arab Emirates after allegedly killing a 26-year-old British man. George claims she acted in self-defense due to enduring domestic abuse from the man she met online.

George’s family alleges that she was fearful of the man and had booked a flight back home but was prevented from leaving as he withheld her passport. They claim that when George demanded her passport back, the man punched her, leading her to grab a kitchen knife out of fear for her safety.

Following her arrest, George reported being subjected to a humiliating experience where she was forced to strip naked in front of male officers without any female officers present. David Haigh, a British human rights activist, has raised concerns about the challenges George may face in proving self-defense due to what he perceives as flaws in the UAE’s criminal justice system.

Haigh emphasized that the system in the UAE lacks basic human protections and can be intimidating for foreign detainees, often pressuring them to sign statements in Arabic without proper translation. He also highlighted the difficulties George may encounter in presenting a self-defense argument as a woman, noting the societal biases she may face in the legal process compared to other countries.

While the UAE criminal procedure law allows the public prosecution to lead investigations and restrict a defendant’s lawyer from accessing full case files during early questioning, Haigh stressed the importance of thoroughly examining George’s abuse allegations. He urged for a fair investigation that includes medical evidence, witness statements, and a comprehensive review of the relationship history between George and the deceased.

Haigh called on George’s family not to lose hope and advised them to seek legal support cautiously. He also urged the Foreign Office to play a more active role in providing assistance to British nationals facing serious charges abroad. The case has drawn international attention, with allegations of mistreatment towards George, although Dubai authorities have not publicly addressed these claims.

Haigh highlighted the disparity between Dubai’s glamorous image and the harsh reality faced by some foreign detainees within the justice system. George’s family expressed concerns for her well-being, emphasizing her desperate attempt to leave the country before her arrest. The Foreign Office confirmed that they are in contact with the British woman detained in the UAE and are supporting her family while liaising with local authorities.
