Eva Marie Saint, a slender actress who achieved fame by winning an Oscar for her debut film, “On the Waterfront,” and starring alongside Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” has passed away at the age of 102, as confirmed by her family representative, Jeff Sanderson.

Saint, known for her acting career that extended well into her 90s, passed away at her Los Angeles residence on Tuesday. Her remarkable start in Hollywood as Marlon Brando’s love interest in “On the Waterfront” garnered her instant stardom, with her memorable Oscar acceptance speech while pregnant with her first child further adding to her legacy.

Despite her early success, Saint opted for independence in her career, rejecting studio contracts and turning down opportunities to capitalize on her newfound fame to focus on motherhood. Her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, played a pivotal role in her decision-making, including her eventual role in Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.”

Saint’s selective approach did not deter studios from offering her leading roles in various films, such as “Exodus” and “Raintree County.” She later transitioned to television in the 1970s and experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 1980s, notably in the sitcom “Moonlighting” and the comedy “Nothing in Common.”

Throughout her career, Saint demonstrated versatility by taking on roles in television, miniseries, and modern films like “Superman Returns” and “Winter’s Tale.” Her marriage to Hayden lasted 65 years until his passing in 2016.

Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, Saint initially aspired to become a teacher but found her calling in acting after auditioning for a play at Bowling Green State University. After honing her craft in soap operas and nighttime dramas, she gained prominence in the burgeoning era of network television in the early 1950s.

A significant milestone in Saint’s career was her acceptance into the Actors Studio under Elia Kazan’s mentorship, where she refined her talents and overcame her shyness with the guidance of acting coach Lee Strasberg.

Saint’s legacy as a talented and independent actress endures, with her memorable performances across a wide range of mediums leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
