Detectives have initiated a fresh investigation into the homicide of Melanie Hall, whose body was discovered years after she went missing while out for the night. They are optimistic that utilizing AI technology will assist in capturing the perpetrator.

Melanie, aged 25, was last sighted by a friend at Cadillacs nightclub in Bath at 1:10 am on June 9, 1996. Her remains were unearthed in October 2009, wrapped in rope and bin bags, nearly 28 miles away, close to a sliproad leading to the M5 motorway near Thornbury, Glos.

This case, one of the lengthiest ongoing murder inquiries in the nation, has been actively pursued by Avon and Somerset Police for almost three decades. The investigative team has commenced a comprehensive review of the case, digitizing 90 crates of evidence to leverage the latest technology for analysis.

Reducing the pool of “persons of interest” to below 20, detectives are re-examining alibi witnesses to validate their statements. Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender, heading the cold case team, is convinced that delving into the archives holds the key to unraveling the mystery.

Lavender expressed confidence in the potential of AI advancements to provide new insights into the existing data. AI can streamline the process of reviewing extensive material in cold cases, such as CCTV footage, emails, and witness statements, significantly reducing the time required compared to traditional methods.

Operation Denmark, the investigation into Melanie’s murder, has involved a substantial number of officers and extensive CCTV analysis. Specialist officers are now meticulously scrutinizing the footage to identify any overlooked sightings of Melanie or clues related to the 36 vehicles associated with potential suspects.

Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the case, but no charges have been filed to date. The investigation has circled back to exploring leads from individuals close to Melanie, emphasizing the importance of re-interviewing alibi witnesses.
