“Air Calédonie Faces Bankruptcy Crisis, Aims for Revival”

Published on

An essential airline facing financial troubles has declared bankruptcy, resulting in grounded flights; however, there is hope for its revival. Air Calédonie, the primary airline serving New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific, filed for bankruptcy last month due to disruptions caused by a protest movement among customers in the territory’s remote islands.

The protesters obstructed vital airfields in response to the company’s decision to relocate Air Calédonie’s operations from the Nouméa Magenta airport to the international La Tontouta base, which is over 50km away from Nouméa city. This blockade significantly worsened Air Calédonie’s financial situation, leading to an estimated daily loss of around £73,000 and jeopardizing the company’s ability to meet its payroll obligations in the near future.

As a result of the crisis, half of Air Calédonie’s workforce has been placed on temporary contracts with reduced pay. New Caledonia President, Alcide Ponga, expressed concerns, stating, “It appears that someone is seeking the demise of AirCal.” Despite these challenges, the airline remains committed to saving a crucial business for New Caledonia and formulating a sustainable recovery strategy. Established in 1954, Air Calédonie’s fate now lies in a Commerce Tribunal in New Caledonia that has initiated a court-supervised recovery process for the airline.

Although discussions with the protest leaders and French State representatives failed to yield progress over the weekend, the Nouméa Commerce Tribunal, now overseeing the airline’s affairs, announced that a salvage plan for Air Calédonie could be on the horizon. Public Prosecutor Yves Dupas emphasized that this could be the company’s final opportunity for survival. The proposed process involves freezing debts incurred before April 14 to safeguard the company’s financial flow during a six-month period, with the possibility of extension, aiming to restore the airline to a sustainable operational level.

This strategic move is intended to secure the company’s cash flow through continued operations, leading to a potential resurgence in activity levels over time.
