A young woman was barred from boarding a flight during a heatwave for wearing shorts and a crop top that airline staff deemed too revealing. Edda Pilz, also known as Edda Elisa, recounted being stopped at the boarding gate while trying to get on a Lufthansa flight as the temperature soared past 30C.

The 25-year-old had opted for sportswear to combat the heat but was allegedly refused entry by Lufthansa personnel. According to Edda, she was intercepted by an airline employee as she tried to scan her boarding pass, who bluntly stated, “You can’t proceed.”

Upon questioning the reason for the denial, Edda was taken aback when the staff member retorted, “You’re practically naked.” Despite asserting that her attire was standard sportswear, Edda was instructed to cover up. She complied by putting on a jacket, which she was then required to zip up entirely before being allowed to proceed with boarding.

Expressing her willingness to abide by rules, Edda demanded clarity on the regulations in place. Lufthansa responded by stating that the language allegedly used by their staff did not align with their guidelines. The airline emphasized the importance of passengers wearing attire suitable for public travel that respects the comfort of all individuals from various backgrounds.

This policy, part of their standard operating procedures, grants employees the discretion to enforce it. Lufthansa assured that they take any reports of inconsistencies seriously and internally investigate such occurrences.

Edda managed to board the flight after donning the jacket as requested. Airlines globally reserve the right to refuse passengers dressed in attire deemed “offensive” or “inappropriate” as outlined in their terms and conditions. This practice is aimed at averting conflicts among passengers, ensuring safety during emergencies, and upholding hygiene standards. The interpretation of what constitutes “appropriate” attire often relies on individual staff judgment.
