Airlines Worldwide React to Surging Fuel Crisis

Multiple airlines globally are taking significant actions in response to the escalating jet fuel crisis, with flight cancellations and new charges becoming commonplace. The surge in fuel prices, which have risen from around $85-$90 per barrel to as high as $150-$200 recently, is primarily attributed to heightened tensions related to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

As a result of the sharp increase in costs, airlines are being compelled to adjust their operations by increasing fares, reducing flight routes, and reevaluating their financial projections. The spike in fuel prices has raised concerns about potential disruptions, with warnings that Europe could face severe jet fuel supply shortages within a short span if the critical Strait of Hormuz remains closed, according to Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency.

Over 30 airlines have disclosed various measures they are implementing due to the fuel crisis. Actions range from flight cancellations to the introduction of fuel surcharges:

– AirAsia X has trimmed approximately 10% of its flights and imposed a fuel surcharge of roughly 20%.
– Air France-KLM is boosting long-haul and cabin fares by 50 euros per round trip, canceling flights, and discontinuing 160 European services by KLM.
– Air India is transitioning to distance-based fuel surcharges due to inadequate coverage of rising costs in current pricing structures.
– Air New Zealand is reducing flights for May and June, raising fares, and suspending its full-year earnings forecast.
– Akasa Air has introduced fuel surcharges ranging from 199 to 1,300 Indian rupees ($2 to $14) on domestic and international routes.
– Alaska Air is increasing checked baggage fees by up to $150 on North American routes.
– American Airlines is raising baggage fees and adjusting some economy benefits.
– Asiana Airlines is cutting 22 flights between April and July due to fuel expenses.
– Cathay Pacific is canceling a portion of flights and increasing fuel surcharges.
– China Eastern Airlines is increasing fuel surcharges for domestic flights.
– Delta Airlines is reducing capacity and raising bag fees.
– Easyjet anticipates higher ticket prices as existing fuel hedges expire.
