Alan Cumming has openly discussed the increasing hostility he perceives the LGBTQ+ community is encountering in today’s society.

The renowned Scottish actor stars in Russell T Davies’s latest Channel 4 production “Tip Toe,” which explores the challenges and prejudice faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the current era.

Cumming, a 61-year-old actor acclaimed for his performances in Cabaret and hosting The Traitors, shared that he has faced significant online abuse. Despite residing in a privileged and liberal queer community, he expressed feeling the animosity, particularly on social media platforms.

Managing a gay bar and club in New York, Cumming noted a noticeable shift in the atmosphere as his employees have expressed heightened anxiety about their daily routines, even in the typically liberal city of New York.

In “Tip Toe,” Cumming plays Leo, a bar owner in Manchester’s Gay Village, embroiled in a conflict with his volatile neighbor, portrayed by David Morrissey. The drama explores group dynamics and the pressing threats confronting the LGBTQ+ community.

Reflecting on his role, Cumming emphasized the complexity of his character, highlighting his loneliness and vulnerability beneath a facade of strength. He also appreciated the character’s portrayal as HIV positive, shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals with HIV/AIDS and serving as a symbol for queer rights and the LGBTQ+ movement throughout different life stages.

Davies, the creator, pointed out that the world has become increasingly dangerous for minorities compared to 25 years ago, attributing much of this escalation to the negative influences of the digital realm, which have fueled hatred and division.

“Tip Toe” is scheduled to premiere on Channel 4 this Sunday.
