Renowned actor Alan Rickman, best known for his role in the Harry Potter series, made a poignant seven-word plea to medical professionals upon learning of his terminal cancer diagnosis. The beloved star, aged 69, passed away in 2016 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer has alarmingly low survival rates, with only 22 percent of patients surviving beyond 30 days, and approximately 62 percent receiving their diagnosis at stage four.
A decade after his death, Alan’s spouse Rima Horton disclosed his final words to healthcare providers during his last weeks. In an interview with the Sunday Times, she recounted, “The first thing he told the oncologist was, ‘I don’t want to die in pain,’ and they ensured he didn’t.”
Close friend and Love Actually co-star Emma Thompson reportedly played a significant role in ensuring Alan’s comfort during his final days. Rima mentioned how Emma transformed Alan’s hospital room into a cozy space with a standing lamp and soft furnishings.
Rima shared that Alan wanted to bid farewell to his friends in his own way, meticulously planning his own funeral. She is auctioning a collection of Harry Potter books, signed by co-stars such as Helena Bonham-Carter, Ralph Fiennes, and Rupert Grint, to honor Alan’s portrayal of Severus Snape.
Describing Snape as a “brilliant” character and a vital part of Alan’s life, Rima expressed that Alan’s cancer diagnosis in 2015 came as a shock. While in Los Angeles for promotion, Alan began experiencing severe leg pain, prompting his return to the UK where he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He chose not to disclose his diagnosis to close ones to avoid their pity. Undergoing chemotherapy extended his life by three months. Proceeds from the Harry Potter auction will fund innovative breath test research at Imperial College London, aiming to detect pancreatic cancer early.
Rima also shared Alan’s thoughts on Harry Potter. He chronicled his reflections in a journal released as Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries, where he initially felt indifferent towards the series but later engaged with it. Despite initial reservations, he eventually embraced his role in the franchise.
Emma Thompson revealed that she bid farewell to Alan in his final moments. The actress, who portrayed his on-screen wife in Love Actually, penned a heartfelt tribute reflecting on Alan’s humor, wisdom, and impact on her life.
