Renowned horticulturist and host of the popular show Gardeners’ World, Alan Titchmarsh, has recently made a significant lifestyle change by downsizing from his Grade II listed home in Hampshire to a smaller property with a reduced garden in Surrey. This decision, especially challenging for Alan and his wife Alison, marks the end of their era in a garden that has been their labor of love for over two decades.
In a heartfelt piece for BBC Gardeners’ World magazine, Alan shared the rationale behind this transition. He explained that managing a vast garden spanning approximately four acres requires substantial effort and, to continue pursuing his passion for writing and broadcasting, he needs assistance that cannot be sustained independently. Reflecting on the words of Queen Elizabeth II, Alan acknowledged the bittersweet nature of leaving a garden that holds cherished memories of his family’s growth.
Expressing deep emotions, Alan confessed that departing from the garden attached to their five-bedroom residence is a poignant moment for him. Despite the attachment, he emphasized his resolve to move forward without looking back once the gate is closed.
While downsizing his living space, Alan is not slowing down in pursuing his gardening endeavors. He recently launched his own YouTube channel, Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh, which has quickly garnered over 100,000 subscribers. Delighted by the channel’s success, Alan expressed gratitude for the support and the opportunity to share his expertise with a growing audience.
